HERITAGE OPEN DAYS
The Wirral Heritage open days have grown from strength to strength.
Last year we had 42 participants in the Open Days, this year we have a total of 60 also the period has been extended 3rd September to 11th September 2011.
Look out for our brochure which is available at end of July beginning of August from Libraries etc.
BIDSTON WINDMILL
Bidston Hill, Boundary Road, Bidston, Wirral, CH43 7PD
The windmill is a brick built tower mill, built to replace a wooden peg mill that was destroyed by a fire in 1791, and used wind to grind corn up to 1875. The mill and roof have been recently extensively restored by Wirral Borough Council. Well worth a look.
ADMISSION DETAILS:
Saturday 10 September, 10am to 12 noon, 2pm to 4pm
No booking required, first come first served.
Refreshments will be available from the cafe at the Tam O'Shanter Farm.
Limited access into the mill but a new pathway from Tam O'Shanter car park makes access easier.

BIRKENHEAD TOWN HALL
Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, Wirral, CH41 5BR
The old Town Hall is a fine Grade 2* listed building opened to the public in 1886. Built with a combination of Storeton stone and Scottish granite. Although now empty, there are memorials and a stained glass window recording some of the town's past events, and a projector room where for the last 17 years the Projected Picture Trust have shown library cinema club films.
ADMISSION DETAILS:
The building will be open Monday 5th, Tuesday 6th, Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th and Friday 9 September.
Please note Bookings can only be madfe two weeks prior to 3 September 2011. Pre-booking required.

CLIFTON ROAD MASONIC HALL

Listed building, former Baptist Chapel converted for use as a Masonic meeting place.
ADMISSION DETAILS:
The building will be open to visitors on Sunday 11 September between 11 and 3pm.
Members will be present to show visitors the interior of the building.

FLORAL PAVILION

The Floral Pavilion is Wirral's premier entertainment centre, comprising a large scale theatre, conference centre and panoramic lounge with breathtaking views across The Mersey and Liverpool Bay. The Floral Cafe is a perfect place to relax in. the multi-purpose conference centre offers facilities for businesses, weddings, exhibitions and other events and seminars. It can cater for sit-down meals for 50 to 300 people.

FORT PERCH ROCK

Fort Perch was built in 1828 as a defence battery to protect the Port of Liverpool during the Napoleonic Wars. It is unique because the fabric still preserves elements of its many modifications. It is now Grade 2* listed.
ADMISSION DETAILS:
Fort Perch Rock will be open Thursday 8 September 10am to 5pm.
An illustrated talk on the tragic 1859 Charter disaster by Bernie McDonald - Thursday 8 September 1pm to 3pm.
An archeology taster by Ruth McDonald - Thursday 8 September 1pm to 3pm.

FORT PERCH ROCK AND REDCOATS

Fort Perch Rock was named after the nearby Sea Perch and Rock Channel. The barracks could accommodate over a hundred men and officers. Its defence included 18 guns to protect the liverpool and Rock Channel from invasion. It is now Grade 2* listed.

Fort Perch rock will be open Friday 9 September 10am to 5pm.
An illustrated talk, Bob Bird's Eye View of New Brighton by Robin Bird - Friday 9 September, 1pm to 3pm.

GRAND ENTRANCE SOUTH LODGE
Grand Entrance South Lodge, Birkenhead Park, Park Drive, Birkenhead, CH41 4HY
A rare opportunity to view the Grand Entrance and its hidden courtyard. The Grand Entrance was designed by Lewis Hornblower, who also designed the boathouse and bridges.
ADMISSION DETAILS:
Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 September - 12 noon until 4pm.
No booking required but limited to groups of 10 maximum.
There are steps leading up to the entrance and a fairly steep staircase inside.

HOYLAKE LIFEBOAT MUSEUM
North Parade, Hoylake, Wirral, CH47 2AL
Tour round a Victorian Lifeboat Building, housing a Victorian lifeboat and lifeboat models, local maritime history items and memorabilia. You can see two former Hoylake RNLI lifeboats in their original home. Voluntary donations gratefully appreciated.

LADY LEVER ART GALLERY

The Art Gallery was founded by William Hesketh Lever (1851-1925) and is dedicated to the memory of his wife Elizabeth. The gallery contains the best of his personal art collection. The Gallery opened in 1922 and is built in the Classical style. The architects were William and Segar Owen. It houses one of the most beautiful collections of fine and decorative arts in the UK, including British 18th and 19th century painting and furniture, Wedgwood and Chinese porcelain displays.

LADY LEVER ART GALLERY TOURS

LEASOWE LIGHTHOUSE
Leasowe Common, North Wirral Coastal Park, Wirral, CH46 4TA
The lighthouse was erected in 1763 to guide ships to safe anchorage at Hoyle Lake. It is the oldest brick-built lighthouse in the country and was the first building to have cavity walls. There is a sprial iron staircase with 130 steps and the building rises to 101 feet. It ceased to function as a lighthouse in 1908.
ADMISSION DETAILS:
Sunday 4 September and Sunday 11 September 12 noon to 4pm. Saturday 10 September 10am onwards.
Sponsored abseil - contact to register and take park.
Pre-booking required for abseil but not for open day visits.

PENSBY HALL
Pensby Hall, Pensby Hall Lane, Off Irby Road, Heswall, Wirral, CH61 6XR
This Grade II listed Hall is one of Wirral's best kept secrets, hidden down a small lane. It was built by Sir William Glegg in about 1688 and operated as a farm. It contains a wealth of architectural details and stands in extensive grounds.
